We are so glad you decided to ride with us on this Great American Treasure. We make history come alive and you will experience today the same ride, the same views, and the same adventure that our passengers have done for over 131 years.
Our mission is to preserve history. We truly believe the best way to preserve history is to make its presentation so interesting and exciting that people will pay a fair price for the experience. We don't want tax dollars or charity. The D&SNGRR will stand on its own as it has for over a century.

What is it about the Durango & Silverton that captivates people? They thrill at the conductor 's announcement: All aboard! People on the street and in passing cars stop, smile and wave when they see its powerful locomotives and colorful cars pass by. Passengers and train crew happily return the greeting. From all over the world, or just up the road, people come to ride - and to work - on this historic treasure.
"Seasons of the Narrow Gauge" captures the sights, sounds and stories of this beloved train and its people. More than 200 magnificent photographs tell the story of a year in the operation of the Durango & Silverton, both on the train and behind the scenes. Eminent historian Duane Smith recounts the story of how the railroad came to Durango and Silverton, and what it took to keep it alive when Americans had shifted their allegiance to planes and automobiles. Owners Allen and Carol Harper tell us what they are doing to assure the railroad will educate and entertain future generations and remain the ultimate historic railroad in the world.
This beautiful book follows passengers through the seasons, as they revel in the stunning scenery of the San Juan Mountains, past sheer cliffs, steep canyons and thundering waterfalls, meadows of wildflowers and swift flowing rapids. I t captures the warming rays of sun peaking through the roof of the Silver Vista in summer and the hush of a winter's day when the sound of the train whistle echoes off mountain peaks.
