A Look at Telluride
Don't Just Escape......Transcend
Nestled in a box canyon surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains, the Town of Telluride is perhaps one of the most scenically beautiful places in North America, if not the world.
With a central role in the history of the American West, the core area of Telluride was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964 - one of only four Colorado communities with this honor. The romance of snow keeps Telluride alive, but the
discovery of gold and silver put it on the map: It remains one of the last places in the country that surveyors mapped.
In 1880, the railroad arrived in a town boasting all the amenities of a thriving community, with saloons, gambling and a much-heralded redlight district. Mining for silver, gold, zinc, lead and copper resulted in an impressive 350 miles of tunnels that honey-comb the mountains. The wealth of Telluride attracted the likes of Butch Cassidy and his "Wild Bunch," who made a brazen bank withdrawal in 1889.
Today, the rugged beauty that surrounds this once-boisterous mining community has shaped the town, presenting a captivating mix of old and new, sophisticated culture and rugged adventure. Colorful Victorian-era homes, boutiques, art galleries and gourmet restaurants
- set amid spectacular scenery - make Telluride and its next-door neighbor, Mountain Village, the ideal destination for a Rocky Mountain vacation, business conference, convention, wedding, family reunion or other special event.
