Nestled in a box canyon surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks of the San Juan Mountains, the Town of Telluride is perhaps one of the most scenically beautiful places in North America, if not the world.

With a central role in the history of the American West, Telluride's downtown was designated a National Historic Landmark District in 1964-one of only four Colorado communities with this honor. The romance of winter snow and summer festivals keep Telluride alive, but the discovery of gold and silver originally put it on the map. In 1880, the railroad arrived, helping create a town that boasted all the amenities of a thriving community: saloons, gambling and a much-heralded red-light district. Mining for silver, gold, zinc, lead and copper resulted in an impressive 350 miles of tunnels that honeycomb
the mountains. The wealth of Telluride even attracted the likes of Butch Cassidy, who made his first brazen bank "withdrawal" in 1889.

Today, the rugged beauty that surrounds this once-boisterous mining community has shaped the town, presenting a captivating mix of old and new, sophisticated culture and rugged adventure.
