90th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, 90th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, July 8, Spencer Penrose of Colorado Springs realized early the tourist potential of Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs. In 1915 Penrose finished converting the narrow carriage road to the summit of the 14,110-foot mountain into the Pikes Peak Highway. In order to publicize his adopted hometown and his new road, he devised a simple plan - run an automobile race to the summit of Pikes Peak on the new highway.
