Late in February, sandhill cranes, the San Luis Valley's oldest visitors, begin their annual trek from south to north, stopping off near the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge to load up on fuel. For millions of years, the sandhills have been spending their "Spring Break" in Colorado's Valley of the Cranes and more recently, wildlife watchers have been drawn to wonder at this phenomenal natural spectacle.

Big Air on Elk, Crested Butte
The main street of downtown Crested Butte is transformed into a giant huck fest with Colorado Freeskier's annual event. After a huge kicker is built on Elk Avenue, skiers and riders are pulled to speed by the snowmobile and compete to impress with big air, tricks and the not so rare wipeout. The event then transforms into a night of festivities with live music and parties at local establishments through town.

The 6th annual Schneetag event (pronounced Sch-knee Tog) invites teams of four to create a craft that they will pilot down a slope at Spider Sabich and attempt to float across a 30x20 foot pond. Every team has a theme and will perform a skit before they descend. This event is just as ridiculous and entertaining as it sounds. Prizes included a trip to the Summer X Games in Los Angeles, tickets to a Colorado Rockies game in Denver and tickets to Rock Jam.

31st Annual Telluride Balloon Festival is one of the smaller festivals, it is arguably the most beautiful of the season. Weather permitting, over a dozen hot air balloons launch from Town Park on the east end of town and sail down the valley landing about one mile out of town. The balloons launch at sunrise (between 6:45 and 7 am) and bystanders often get to help with the launch - and get a ride to boot!

Ford Amphitheater, 2 performances at the Vilar Performing Arts Center, a series of master classes and free interactive events in the streets of Vail at Solaris Plaza and Arrabelle Square. Artists that have visited the Festival include: New York City Ballet MOVES, BalletX, Martha Graham Dance Company, Paul Taylor Dane Company, Pacific Northwest Ballet and stars from the Royal Ballet, New York City Ballet, America Ballet Theater, Alvin Ailey Dance Company, the Moscow Stanislavsky Ballet, Hamburg Ballet and Harlem Dance Company. The 2014 Festival line-up will be announced in January 2014 and tickets will go on-sale March 25, 2014.

The Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce created the festival as a fun fall event designed to promote the area's agriculture, especially its home-grown chilies. The event takes place in downtown Pueblo on the Historic Union Avenue between 1st Street and "B" Street. Festival hours are Friday, 3pm-11pm; Saturday, 10am-11pm and Sunday, 10am-6pm. The festival is $2 per person, children under 12 are free. This festival has grown to more than 100,000 attendees over the three days of activities and family fun! The Festival attracts visitors from all over the state as well as some of our neighboring states.

Autumn Gold - A Festival of Bands, Estes Park,
Brats 'n Beer, Bond Park, Listen to some foot tapping music and relax with a cold brew and a mustard-smothered bratwurst at the 20th Autumn Gold Festival. This free Sunrise Rotary fundraiser features cold beer, soft drinks, bratwursts, hot dogs and live music from talented local and Front Range bands. The highlight of Autumn Gold is the popular raffle with the winner taking home the grand prize of $5,000.

Uncorked Wine and Music Festival, Lake City.
Enjoy good music, good wine, good food, and good friends under the changing aspen leaves of historic Lake City. Set the third weekend in September, the festival features six music acts representing several genres, from country to rock to bluegrass to funk. Taste over 100 wines, enjoy a beer from Ska Brewing, and top it off with great food from one of the many vendors. Artisan vendors offer handcrafted treasures from blown-glass to one-of-a-kind hats and clothing.
