Q. When do the roads get bad? How bad are the roads in the winter?
A. Mother Nature is unpredictable but there's usually a snowstorm in the October and it usually catches everyone by surprise. The most current road alerts can be fount at the Colorado Department of Transportation website (www.cotrip.org).

Do I have to need four-wheel drive, chains or snow tires for winter driving?
The Colorado Department of Transportation does a great a great job of keeping heavily traveled roads clear of snow. Unless the storm is a whopper, most modern day cars can travel Colorado's road with all season tires that are in good condition. Front wheel drive is very helpful, but four wheel drive is better. Chains are only necessary for trucks hauling trailers. NOTE: Ice doesn't count for any of the above. THE BEST WAY TO SURVIVE DRIVING THROUGH A COLORADO SNOWSTORM IS TO DRIVE WITH CARE AT A CAUTIOUS SPEED AND WEAR YOUR SAFETY BELT.
Q. What's a switchback and a mountain pass?
A. There are many Colorado mountains that are too steep to just drive straight up. To make the ascent, imagine drawing a Z up the side of a mountain with a road. Every time there's a turn you switchback going up a little bit higher as you drive across the mountain.
Many of Colorado's mountains have terrain that makes it impossible to build a road over them. The low spot between these mountain is called a pass. Switchbacks are often necessary to get to the top of the pass and to get down the pass. Even though a pass is a low point, it's at a very high altitude and weather conditions may be adverse compared to the bottom of the pass. Drive with care. Drive at a cautious speed. Wear your safety belt.
