Colorado Travel Planning Guides : Royal Gorge Country : Rafting and Adventure on the Arkansas

Royal Gorge Region Rafting and Adventure on the Arkansas!

Royal Gorge Rafting, Arkansas River Rafting, Colorado

With its easy access and continuous rapids, the Arkansas River is the most rafted river in the world. Rapids range from mellow Class II to raging Class V along the stretch that runs through Fremont County. Because of the diverse range of whitewater offered, local outfitters draw everyone from families to adrenaline junkies.

Ride the Rapids

The Arkansas River starts at the Continental Divide near Leadville, Colorado and offers various levels of rafting. The river drops 10,000 feet in the first 125 miles as it flows through Lake, Chaffee and Fremont counties, providing some of the best-known big-water rafting in the area.

For a laid back trip, take a half-day trip through Bighorn Sheep Canyon. This is a great trip for families with young children and those who prefer taking in the scenery over taking on rushing whitewater. Thanks to the diverse stretches of water in the Royal Gorge Region, rafters can enjoy calm water and mellow floats year-round.

Cañon City Whitewater Kayak and Recreation Park
A project that's been eight years in the making, the Cañon City Whitewater Kayak and Recreation Park officially opened in the summer of 2010. Funded by a $200,000 Greater Outdoors Colorado Grand and generous local contributions, the park features two man-made waves for kayakers, rafters and boogie-boarders to surf and play on while onlookers enjoy a wading pool and sandstone sideline seating. The park hosts an annual Whitewater Festival

Planning Your Rafting Adventure

Colorado Rafting and Kayaking, Arkansas River, Royal Gorge

When planning your adventure on the river, there are several things to keep in mind. Plan a trip that is appropriate for all the participants in your group. Be honest with yourself and with the outfitter(s) you speak with. Don't get over your head. Ask questions and shop around. Many outfitters in the area offer specials and discounts in the early part of the season, or on weekdays, for example. Once you've chosen an outfitter and a particular trip, come prepared and be on time. Remember, you are not likely to be the only family, group or individual on the trio you have chosen. Being on time means you will have ample opportunity to change, check-in, be fitted for a life-jacket, helmet or other gear. Dress appropriately. You WILL get very wet therefore things that dry quickly, such as swimwear/beach wear are your best bet on warm days. Be sure to bring a change of clothes and dry shoes for after your trip.

Earlier in the season the water can be cool (OK, downright cold). Most outfitters offer wetsuits, spray jackets and river booties for a nominal fee. These items can definitely add to your comfort level and provide for much more enjoyable experience. In Colorado the weather can change quickly and be unpredictable. A wool sweater or fleece jacket is always good to have along on a rafting trip.

All trips include a guide. Guides are not like most people, they don't have "real" jobs, they intend to have fun at all times and are some of the nicest and most entertaining folks you will encounter. They are also highly skilled professionals. Becoming a guide, particularly on the Arkansas, requires dedication, hard work and a love of the outdoors. Their job is not only to get you safely down the river, but also to make you feel comfortable and share their knowledge of the area and the many experiences they've had on the river in the course of their rafting careers.

Most importantly of all, smile, laugh and be ready to have the time of your life.
