South Park Heritage

South Park, Colorado Guide
Heritage
A Unique Place to Call home

In 2009, the U.S. Congress designated South Park National Heritage Area as one of only 49 Heritage Areas in the nation. South Park National Heritage Area encompasses nearly 80% of Park County, including the vast South Park basin and the surrounding mountain ranges and represents a true example of the history of the West. At 10,000 feet above sea level, the South Park is home to ancient Bristlecone trees, abundant wildlife, and plants that are found no where else in the world. Humans have spent summers
in South Park for more than 10,000 years, but it was only 150 years ago that intrepid settlers braved the harsh winters to live here year-round and establish homesteads and towns in this beautiful and rugged land. Some homesteads can be viewed from the highways.
Park County Court House
Visitors to the South Park can practically
immerse themselves in history - spending
the night in historic lodging or modern
facilities overlooking historic landscapes;
eating and shopping in businesses located
in historic structures; hiking, biking or driving along rustic roads that were once buffalo trails or mining roads; taking horseback tours through areas where Ute tribes once spent their summers; and snapping breathtaking photos of buffalo, antelope or other wildlife that share the South Park and surrounding mountain ranges with local residents.

South Park

Much of the land here is privately owned, so while we encourage you to view the historic mining buildings or cattle and buffalo herds on family ranches, please respect private property and your own safety and do not trespass, open gates, enter mining structures or climb fences. South Park City Museum in Fairplay presents an excellent interpretation of life in a 1880s mining town.

Once a part of the town that burned in 1873 destroying most of the original buildings, this museum has rescued historic structures from all over the countyto re-create the look and feel of a bustling mining town. With more
than 60,000 authentic artifacts displayed, this is a "must see" location for anyone wanting to step into history.
