Adventure Seekers

Although the wildfire of 2013 leveled many of the buildings and attractions that had entertained millions of guests since the 360-acre Royal Gorge Bridge and Park opened in 1929, two of the most important components of this landmark remained. Almost miraculously our beloved Bridge – America’s Highest Suspension Bridge – was unscathed. And the spirit of our community, determined to offer this premier attraction to the world again, came through the tragedy stronger than ever.

Instead of focusing on what had been lost, we got to work, and within two weeks, plans to rebuild were underway. Architectural firms were contacted, the burned out shells of buildings and rides were demolished and groundbreaking for the new Visitors Center was held in January 2014. Our new motto? “We Still Stand Tall!”

Now in the 2015 season, the Bridge continues to draw visitors from around the world. The adrenaline-spiking Skycoaster, affectionately known as The Royal Rush, is operating. You’re securely strapped in as up to two of your most daring compadres are lifted 100 feet above the base. Then you are… released to free-fall at 50 mph, swinging out 1,200 feet above the Arkansas River.

Depending on weather and construction progress, many of the other rides that have thrilled millions over the years will once again provide pure Colorado exhilaration. For those who prefer their sky-high travel at a somewhat slower speed, please call to get the latest information on our new Aerial Tram. The quiet ride takes you 2,200 feet across the Royal Gorge, and the view of the river is breathtaking. And while you’re checking on the status of the Aerial Tram, be sure to ask about the Zip Rider, a state-of-the-art zipline that features an automatic braking system.

Helicopter Tours

Of course you can get a huge buzz, literally, with a helicopter tour of the region. Hang onto your hat as your pilot maneuvers above the Gorge to give you a one-of-a-kind view.

ATV, Jeep and Segway Tours

Like to see the backcountry on an ATV? We have just the ticket, with certified guides providing tours that cover varied and challenging terrain, from the Arkansas Valley floor to trails that hit elevations of 9,100 feet above sea level. And to keep it interesting, we have Jeep and Segway tours as well.

Ziplines and River Rafting

Privately owned zipline and rafting companies make sure your visit is one never to be forgotten. “Fly” across the landscape, lose your breath to the views and catch it, again, with excitement. Experience the river much as early day explorers did, rafting the white water rapids and snatch glimpses of native wildlife. Royal Gorge Bridge & Park offers a unique zipline that crosses the gorge.

Technical Climbing

Several challenging rock-climbing venues are within minutes of Cañon City, including the popular Shelf Road Climbing Area accessed by heading north on Field Avenue and north on Red Canyon Road. Campgrounds and base areas where hundreds of bolted routes await. Off the beaten path but still close to civilization, and the climbing is second-to-none.

Biking Bonanza

The Royal Gorge region boasts dozens of hiking, mountain/road biking and 4-wheeling adventures, with trailheads easily accessible from U.S. Highway 50 as well as along the scenic Gold Belt Tour. Be sure to check trail rating before embarking: easy, moderate, difficult, 4-wheel. For all your trail needs, maps are available at the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce or the Cañon City Recreation & Park District.
