Cultural Connection: The Temporary and The Arts Campus at Willits
by Ryan Honey / TACAW
As the cultural nexus of the midvalley, The Temporary realizes the long-term vision of Basalt as a vibrant community connected by art and commerce. The performing-arts venue hosts music, comedy, lectures, independent cinema, performing arts, kids programming and special events. Its location in the heart of Willits is ideal for this hub of vibrant evening and weekend activity. Operated by The Arts Campus at Willits (TACAW), a 501(c)3 nonprofit, The Temporary is a unique blend of performance hall, nightclub, cinema and nonprofit event space that can accommodate up to 300 guests on any given night.
The Temporary is a place for creative expression, entertainment and community engagement. Collaborations in which artistic programming, films and music are used to highlight the vital work of local nonprofits are frequent. Educational programming and the popular Kids Kulture! Series expose kids to great performances and empower students to find their own voice through the arts. These initiatives, coupled with compelling programming, are empowering TACAW to make Basalt a community in which the arts are celebrated and integrated into daily life.
Given the success of The Temporary, TACAW is moving ahead with longstanding plans for a permanent facility. The nonprofit holds a 99-year lease on a parcel near The Temporary and has established an endowment from an ongoing real estate transfer assessment. In a 21st-century facility on its own property, and with room to grow programming and community engagement, the nonprofit will continue to define the cultural identity of Basalt and the entire midvalley for years to come.
