Looking for things to do in Basalt? Basalt, which lies along the Highway 82 corridor on the way to Aspen, is a gem of a town. It's location at the confluence of the Frying Pan and Roaring Fork Rivers makes it truly unique. Nearby Ruedi Reservoir enhances summertime watersports recreation, and around the corner lies world-class skiing at Snowmass and Aspen ski areas. 1. Go out for a date night with dinner and a show. Challenge yourself and hike (or run) up the Arbaney Kittle Trail (White River National Forest #2186). From the trailhead, it’s a steep climb that is just shy of 2 miles to the Fryingpan overlook, which has amazing view of the valley. The trail continues on for 17.5 miles, although many people hike as far as they like and double back. Bring your dog, but be sure to follow leash laws. 4. Drink local with a trip to the Capitol Creek Brewery for locally crafted beer and a bite to eat or visit the tasting room at the Woody Creek Distillers (vodka, rye whiskey, gin).
5. Brush up on Basalt history on the historic walking tour. Visit the Swinging Bridge, watch trout swim in the Fryingpan River, and view the charcoal kilns in Arbaney Park, which date back to the 1880s. The walking tour starts at Basalt Town Hall.
6. Explore some of the best shopping in the Valley. In addition to locally owned retailers with unique offerings, Basalt has a great collection of consignment stores to add a special piece to your closet.
7. Attend a summer concert in either Triangle Park (Willits) or Lions Park (Downtown). Depending on the band, try out your best dance moves.
8. Get to know your local farmers and artisans, savor an amazing lunch, and shop for fresh produce at the Basalt Sunday Market, every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., June 17 to September 30. Bonus points if you stop during a group bike ride.
