48 Hours in Breckenridge

Enjoy Breckenridge in a couple of days.

Breckenridge is one of those Colorado ski towns with a dash of everything. A meandering Main Street runs along a meticulously preserved historic district that’s padded with shops, galleries, restaurants, breweries, spas, lodging and parks. A world-class ski resort is a swift (and free!) gondola ride away. Year-round gondola service provides easy access to public forests. In town, an all-season riverside recreation path is sure to keep the group happy. Plus enough gold rush legacy to wow the greatest of history buffs.

For those with only a weekend to bop around Breck, here are some locally loved secret stashes to throw on your list.

Breckenridge Ski Resort and Gondola

Day 1

Begin the day exploring the groomers, trees, steeps, and high-alpine bowls at Breckenridge Ski Resort. Five peaks and 34 chair lifts across 2,908 acres mean terrain for any level of skier or rider. Rent gear at one of these top outfitters where experts will help suit you up with skis, boards, helmets, and anything else you might need.

Not feeling the downhill action? Call on Good Times Adventures for snowmobiling and dog sledding expeditions. Head to the Breckenridge Nordic Center for scenic cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, ring up Mountain Angler for a little winter fly fishing or connect with Breckenridge Stables for a sleigh ride complete with postcard landscapes and a team of Belgian draft horses.

Stop into the Breckenridge Tap House for lunch. The Main Street staple serves up beer from 37 taps next to slow-braised chicken, carnitas, buffalo and Colorado lamb tacos in a historic 1873 building.

Indulge in some good clean family fun at Escape Room Breckenridge or Mountain Time Escape Rooms where your group is locked in a themed space together to work against the clock, solving riddles and uncovering clues for a key to break free.

If energy allows, toast your day with a nightcap at the Breckenridge Distillery. Sip on craft creations like the Miners Manhattan or the Alpine Picnic made with Breckenridge Pear Vodka while nibbling charcuterie or sharing a sweet treat. Tip: Take advantage of the free shuttle service.

Day 2

No trip to Breckenridge is complete without a slow stroll down Main Street, window-shopping, scoring keepsakes and T-shirts, enjoying coffee and ice cream along the way. Joy of Sox, the Spice Merchants and Fuzziwigs Candy Factory are three standouts. Refresh and reboot at the O2 Lounge oxygen bar, coffee shop and Internet café and then book 90 minutes of bliss at Simply Massage.

Kick back for a wine tasting at the Continental Divide Winery and order gourmet sandwiches from The Cheese Shop across the plaza. (They’ll bring it over to you.)

Let your creative side loose at Ready Paint Fire where canvas painting parties and glass fusing workshops await. Grab a leisurely dinner at one of Breck’s culinary hotspots—Modis, Twist, Ember, and Briar Rose never disappoint.

Breck’s nightlife scene is as young and dynamic or as mature and low-lit-laid-back as you might be craving. Hop from saloon to brewery to lounge and end your evening at the Historic Brown playing pool, ping-pong, and air hockey before dancing to live music and DJs in the adjoining Fox’s Den.
