The Race is on to Open for the 2016/17 Winter Season

It's time to put away the bikes and pull out the skis & boards: three of Colorado's resorts have started blowing snow for the 2016/17 winter season! With the leaves falling from the trees, and some natural snow laying above tree-line, Colorado has quickly moved from fall into winter season. Every year, a drop in temperate signals the start to the friendly competition between Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area to see who be the first resort to open for the season. Alan Henceroth, COO of A-Basin, says it only takes a week of consistent snow-blowing to create the base for a ski run. “If everything went perfectly, cold temps and plenty of water, we can get the mountain open in less than a week. Typically, it does not go perfectly. We mix in some warm, non-snowmaking weather and it takes a little longer. We will see how it plays out the next week or two.”

Loveland is getting pass holders and travelers excited about the season: “Loveland hopes to open sometime mid-late October. It's snowing hard and temps are going to stay low through the week providing great conditions for our snowmakers.” The resorts are a full two weeks ahead of schedule from last year, which has a lot of locals waxing their skis and boards and praying for powder.

Copper Mountain is the third resort to start blowing the white stuff, but it does not participate in the race. Copper hosts athletes for early-season practice on their slopes at the The U.S. Ski Team Speed Center, which offers the only full-length downhill training venue in the world available early season. Copper opens to the public on November 11. If you've already started checking the resort's web cams, it's time to start planning your winter vacation!
