Silverton Colorado is a bit less known and more out of the way than many of Colorado's resort towns, but it's everything and more, especially for the adventurous. Residing at 9,318 feet, it's one of the highest-elevation towns in the US and the seat of San Juan county. Originally founded as a mining area called "Baker's Park," it has transitioned into a tourist destination that features some of Colorado's most extreme skiing, off-road touring, fishing, hiking, and all of what Coloradans love about Colorado. If you can't find things to do in Silverton, you're in the wrong town.
4x4 Off Road in Silverton
Some of the country’s best four-wheel drive roads are found in the area around Silverton. Whether you are exploring ghost towns and mining camps left over from the 1800s along the Alpine Loop or taking in the beauty of the mountains, Silverton is the perfect base camp. Jeep rentals are available if you want to explore these roads on your own. If you prefer to ride along, try a guide company that will tour the high country.
Silverton Mountain
Skiing at Silverton Mountain is unlike any other ski resort in Colorado. It's the highest and steepest ski area in North America, with a peak elevation of 13,487,' and no blue runs down. It's an expert-only ski area. The 1,819 skiable acres are not groomed and feature many bowls, chutes, cliffs, and just natural terrain to be discovered. Only one chairlift to access the area, bring avalanche equipment and be prepared to climb and hike. Heli-skiing, guided tours, and more upon reservation.
Whitewater Rafting in Silverton
World-class upper Animas River whitewater rafting right out of Silverton. At peak flows this is one of the most demanding commercial whitewater runs in the U.S. During the rest of the season, which is 80-90% of the time, this is a trip for most anybody with a sense of adventure and a love for the outdoors.
Horseback Riding
An excellent thing to do while in Silverton is to take a horseback ride to see the San Juan Mountains. You’ll find several stables and outfitters in the area to help. Let these guides also show you into the backcountry for summer thrills.
Fishing Adventures
The San Juan Mountains provide crystal, clear waters for dropping a line. Many rivers and streams are within easy reach from Silverton and the high alpine lakes offer up excellent pan-size trout. Town-owned Molas Lake Park & Campground, 5 miles south of town, is a popular spot to cast your line. Or, consider taking a horseback ride with an emphasis on fishing.
Hiking in the San Juans
Hiking opportunities abound in the San Juan Mountains, are of varying lengths and difficulties, providing something for everyone. Stop by the Silverton Visitors Center at 414 Greene St. or the San Juan Public Lands Office at 1428 Greene St. for more information.
