- The Mile-High City: Denver, the state capital, is famously known as the "Mile-High City" because its elevation is one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level.
- Home of the Highest Pikes: Colorado is home to 58 mountain peaks that rise over 14,000 feet, known as the Fourteeners. Mount Elbert is the highest at 14,440 feet.
- Unique Flora and Fauna: The state boasts diverse wildlife and plant species, from bighorn sheep and black bears to the stunning blue columbine, Colorado’s state flower.

1st - Free Gondolas in Telluride and Breckenridge
Just after I moved to Colorado, I visited the incredible scenic mountain town of Telluride, and I couldn’t believe that they offered free gondola rides for visitors.Telluride

Breckenridge
Breckenridge, another beloved mountain town, features the BreckConnect Gondola. This free gondola connects downtown Breckenridge to the Breckenridge Ski Resort, making it easy for visitors to travel between these popular areas. 2nd - Free Colorado Ghost Town Tour
Colorado is rich in history, particularly from the Gold Rush era, and exploring its ghost towns is a fascinating way to delve into the past. Many of these abandoned towns are open to the public and free to visit. I spent some time in Chaffee County, living in the picturesque town of Salida, Colorado. During my stay, I discovered charming, almost forgotten mountain towns in the surrounding peaks. My favorite among them is:St. Elmo
One of the most accessible and well-preserved ghost towns is St. Elmo. Located in Chaffee County, this former mining town offers a glimpse into Colorado’s mining history with its intact, century-old buildings and structures.- Website: St. Elmo Ghost Town
- Details: St. Elmo is accessible year-round, though conditions can be snowy in the winter. It’s a self-guided tour; you can explore at your own pace. The town features a few remaining structures and old mining equipment.
Other Notable Ghost Towns I visited
- Animas Forks: Located near Silverton, Animas Forks offers well-preserved remnants of a once-thriving mining community.
- Buckskin Joe: Near Buena Vista, this ghost town provides a look at frontier life with several original buildings still standing.
- Once known as Bonanza City, Bonanza, CO is largely abandoned, with just a few full-time residents in the surrounding hills northwest of Villa Grove. Despite this, several historic buildings remain, making the 25-minute detour from Villa Grove worthwhile. Bonanza is accessible via Highway 285, south of Poncha Springs and Salida, and sits at 9,500 feet.
3rd - Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs
The Garden of the Gods is one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in my free Colorado advice. This public park is renowned for its towering sandstone rock formations, which are a result of millions of years of geological activity and free to enter! The park is located in Colorado Springs, a stunning public park renowned for its towering red sandstone formations. This natural landmark features dramatic rock spires and offers scenic trails, rock climbing, and breathtaking views of Pikes Peak. - Details: Admission to the park is free. Visitors can enjoy numerous hiking trails, rock climbing opportunities, and scenic viewpoints. The park also has a visitor center where you can learn more about the geological history and flora of the area.
4th -Train Like a Hero at Manitou Incline
For those seeking a challenging workout, the Manitou Incline is a must-try. This historic incline railway track has been transformed into a steep, grueling hiking trail that ascends 2,000 feet in just under a mile. Each year, my friends and I tackle this challenging uphill hike, and it’s always a blast pushing ourselves to the top. Once we reach the summit, the fastest hiker typically earns a large beer from the rest of the group.- Website: Manitou Incline
- Details: The Manitou Incline is free to hike, though you should be prepared for a tough climb. The trail features a series of steps once part of a cog railway. It’s a popular spot for fitness enthusiasts and offers breathtaking views of Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.

Durango, in the state's southwest corner, offers a unique blend of history and charm with its Wild West atmosphere. The town’s historic district, especially around Main Avenue, showcases preserved buildings and museums celebrating its colorful past.Strater Hotel
