Faces - Portraiture

January 9 - February 5, 2019

427 E Colorado Ave., Colorado Springs, CO

Cottonwood is thrilled to announce a juried show for January, composed of artists of all mediums, coming from within Cottonwood and from across the region. These artists have brought their best depictions of portraiture, both traditional and experimental.

Portraiture, has become increasingly crucial within the last decade. With an institutional urgency to include a more diverse audience within the creative process, contemporary portraiture is reinventing figurative painting, but this time without the limitations of class and Western academic tradition. The digital age has also generated a need for authenticity, especially in a time when reality is warped by an online presence. The very notion of truth, or fact, is blurry and the multifaceted possibilities of portraiture allow for a more fully fledged expression of a person or animal companion. It is reassuring to look at the work of an artist who is distinctly in control of their craft, who is able to create a material reality that is rooted in recognition and seeing.

Working within the parameters of portraits of others and animals, in every media, these artists present to you their best interpretation of the intimacy of a face through their own lens.
