Outdoor Recreation

Every season, every day, there’s something for everyone in our Rocky Mountain playground!

Really! Hike, bike, ATV or take a horseback ride along hundreds of miles of trails. Fish and float our streams and lakes. Cross-country ski, snowshoe, sled or snowmobile our wintry landscape, and downhill ski and board at Ski Cooper. Play a round or two of golf. Ride a stagecoach or take  a scenic tour aboard the Leadville, Colorado and Southern Railroad. Sky’s the limit? Hardly! Come in by plane at Leadville-Lake County Airport, and zipline while here.

Did we mention Mt. Massive Golf Course is the highest golf course in North America? And that in addition to the world-renowned Leadville Race Series 100-mile foot and mountain bike races, there are also 5- and 10Ks, triathlons, marathons and fun runs in the summer!

Also, you can fish a 102-mile stretch of the Arkansas River Gold Medal status, or try your luck from a boat on Turquoise or Twin Lakes, Hayden Reservoir or other mountain lakes and streams.

And you can get wet whitewater rafting the Arkansas, kayaking and canoeing Turquoise Lake and relaxing at the Lake County Aquatic Center’s indoor pool and hot tub.

If you’re a backcountry enthusiast, consider hiking a challenging Fourteener, following the Colorado Trail and Continental Divide or meandering leisurely through a meadow of wildflowers. The pace is yours to set! Also, there are 11 huts open for hikers and backcountry skiers as part of the 10th Mountain Division Huts system near Leadville. If you like to sleep under the stars or tenting it, you can camp in the national forests and BLM’s 188,000 acres of pristine backcountry.

Downhill fun galore is yours at Ski Cooper and Chicago Ridge, with lessons and rentals. Also, there are more than 50 miles of free, groomed trails for X-C.

The winter thrills are big, and so is the air at times on the hook shoots at Dutch Henri Sledding Hill. Tubes can be rented, and you can BYO plastic sleds and tubes, but metal runners are prohibited. And don’t forget our 30,000-square-foot Leiter Ice Skating Rink!
