Welcome to Cañon City

The people of Cañon City invite you to explore downtown, chat with the locals and get acquainted with the community.

Discover Downtown

Located just eight miles east of the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park, and one block north of Highway 50 (also known as Royal Gorge Boulevard), Main Street Cañon City offers a diverse, historic downtown commercial district. Downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the largest intact historical districts in Colorado. The 80 buildings comprising the district form a cohesive grouping that reflects Cañon City’s development from the Territorial days of the 1870’s to today.

The authentic small-town Main Street atmosphere is evident in many well-preserved buildings, including “Old Max” (the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility) at First and Main Street. A stroll down historic Main Street and Macon Street, one block to the North, will introduce you to the city’s cultural and social center.

Flavorful Options

Coffee shops and restaurants featuring Mexican, Italian, Chinese and down-home cuisine, as well as a variety of watering holes, are abundant along Main Street. Families can enjoy a handcrafted pizza while being entertained by a magician; visitors and locals sit side by side on bar stools devouring burgers and refreshing microbrews after a game of pool; while others people-watch and savor homemade pastries and desserts.

Boutiques, Galleries & More

Shoppers will find small business owners offering books, musical instruments, clothing, shoes, furniture, fresh flowers, electronics, art, jewelry and so much more. Of course, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up that perfect souvenir to commemorate your visit. A handful of second-hand stores will satisfy the bargain hunters in your group and several local art galleries and museums will keep everyone busy for hours.

Chamber of Commerce & Visitor’s Center

If you have already arrived in Cañon City, welcome! If you are planning a stay, we look forward to your visit. Either way, the Cañon City Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center is eager to help you make the most of your time here. Our Visitor Information Centers are located in two convenient locations. In the historic Peabody home at 403 Royal Gorge Blvd, (Hwy 50 at 4th St.), open year round, Monday through Friday, 8AM – 5PM, or the visitor’s cabin located just two blocks west in Veteran’s Park, (enter just south of Hwy 50 on 3rd St.) where our volunteers are available to help 7 days a week, 9 AM – 4 PM, from early May to mid-September.

At both locations, you will find a friend, free wi-fi, maps, and brochures for attractions, activities, lodging, dining, walking tours, and discount coupons when available.
