All Aboard! The Durango and Silverton Railroad Guide
2011 Durango Melodrama at
the
HenryStrater Theatre

Durango Melodrama
I don't think Melodrama Theatre got its name by accident. If there is anything about Melodrama that an audience would remember, it would be the DRAMA! There is the unpredictable complication of the plot, the lovable hero
and the conniving villain. Add a dash of "Old Fashioned" entertainment through Ragtime piano tunes and amusing Vaudeville acts and you have the perfect recipe for a night of, you guessed it, drama!

The historic Henry Strater Theatre is poised to
open the 2011 summer with two fantastic shows
featuring, "The Pursuit of Happiness" and "After
Dark." "We had such a great response from our 2010 summer Melodrama that we wanted to
create an even better theatre experience for our audience this year," said General Manager, Michelle Thom. "From tourists to locals, the Melodrama created such a buzz throughout
the community we knew we had to up the ane for 2011".

Located at the historic Strater Hotel in Durango, Colorado, the Henry Strater Theatre has been
putting on shows and Melodrama since the early 1960s when it housed the Diamond Circle Melodrama. Each Melodrama production is always followed by a set of Vaudeville routines that are hilarious and clever and enjoyed by the entire family.
"The Pursuit of Happiness," by Lawrence and
Armina Marshall Langer, is a tale set during the American Revolution, of a loveable Hessian
soldier wanting to surrender to the Americans as he is charmed by the idea of the 'American
Way.' This is a fun and patriotic play with just the right amount of the inevitable complications of
the period.

"After Dark," by Dion Boucicault and adaptation by John T. Baker, is set in 19th Century London and is the convoluted combination of mistaken identities, lost inheritances and trickery that characterizes classic Melodrama. "After Dark" features the highly anticipated arrival of the
speeding train as it races towards its victim, the hero and beautiful heroine, and of course
our conspiring villain.

The Durango Melodrama at the Henry Strater Theatre will begin nightly showings on June
10 through September 24. Each show will start at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday,
with the two shows running on alternating nights. Reservations can be made online, by phone, at the theatre box office or at the Durango Train ticket office. Ticket prices start at $18. Dinner and a Show packages are also available, featuring a three-course meal at the Mahogany Grille
