The Royal Gorge Vacation Guide
Enchantment West of Canon City

Royal Gorge Country may seemingly be home to only two towns (Cañon City & Florence), but in reality, there are at least 12 small towns and communities that comprise Fremont County and they're located on the Arkansas River West of Canon City, the Royal Gorge and Highway 9. Each and every area adds its very own flavor to the culture and the countryside. From locally baked pastries and handmade artistries, from campgrounds on the river to horse rides in the Sangre De Cristos, you can find it on a main street or in a secret nook.

Cotopaxi
This former whistle-stop town is nestled along the Arkansas River.
Rafting outfitters and a campground call the quaint community home along with a handful of shops and eateries.

Howard
The Arkansas River runs through this Pleasant Valley town,

area features horseback riding, hiking, ATV tours and golfing.

Rafting

Coaldale
A bustling mining town and popular touring stop for opera stars
in the late 1800s, remote Coaldale is surrounded by towering
peaks and is known for its secluded camping opportunities.

Parkdale
Parkdale's prime location on the Arkansas River and near the
Royal Gorge make it a popular base camp for visitors. The area is the gateway to whitewater rafting and Bighorn Sheep Canyon.
Communities West

Bighorn Sheep Canyon
Long known as a gateway into the Rockies, Highway 50 divides Cañon City as it runs west through the towering rock walls of the Arkansas River Canyon. This beautiful canyon has been dubbed "Bighorn Canyon," and hosts a thriving population of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Colorado's state animal. The majestic animals are often seen on both sides of the river from convenient turn-outs throughout the canyon.
