August 18 - 21, 2016479 Main Ave, Durango, CO
It's a Hardrocker Holiday: Mining competitions are known to bring out some of the best in their field and you’ll be awestricken watching the top talent in the Railrocker Festival’s hardrock mining competitions. Spectators will have the opportunity to see firsthand the skills that took grit and guts and steeled determination. The Double Jack drilling is a must-see event that takes expert teamwork as one man holds the steel chisel with his bare hands while the other man swings the 8-pound sledge hammer to deliver a firm blow to the chisel, and never miss. While events like this are not recommended for a novice, there are plenty of other events to test the endurance of both men and women of all ages including the wheel barrel race, arm wrestling, team tug-o-war or spike driving. As always there will be events for men, women, and children including horseshoes, hand mucking, machine drilling, tug-of-war, arm wrestling, and much more.
Railroading Events: Railroading special events include a Champagne Brunch Train, Murder Mystery Train, Evening Cocktail Train, Presidential Train and we are finalizing the details for special trips on the visiting steam locomotive #315 built in 1895.
Action-packed days are followed by fun nights with live entertainment in downtown Durango on Friday night and an early evening concert in Silverton, CO (details at time of writing are being finalized). Transportation between the venues will be available via the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad as well as bus options to Silverton and back.
Railrocker Festival’s goal is to safeguard this history and ensure that this culture is imparted to the next generation through incredibly interesting events where competitor’s passions of nearly-lost mining and railroading techniques are displayed. Its people and their lives have created a family union with enduring appeal not only in the United States but also throughout the world.
