About Roxborough Park

Million-year-old sandstone monoliths jutting skyward represent “old Colorado” and the natural beauty of the wildlife refuge found at Roxborough State Park. Located in the foothills west of Castle Rock, hiking and nature study are the main features of this park. There are a variety of scenic hiking trails of varying difficulty, including the 6.2-mile round-trip trail that goes to the top of Carpenter Peak. Due to the varying elevations and the park’s location, where the mountains meet the prairie, there is a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Different plant communities can be found on the sunny versus shady sides of the rock formations. Roxborough is a Colorado Natural Area, National Natural Landmark, and Audubon Society Important Bird Area. The visitor center provides an educational and nature-study aspect. To protect the park’s fragile ecosystem, pets are prohibited (no dogs), rock climbing is prohibited, and bikes are restricted to the main roads only. There is no camping or picnic facilities—water and restrooms are at the visitor center only. — Back to All State Parks.
