Bamboo Fly Rod Building Class

Learn how to build your own bamboo fly rod. This course includes six days of master rodsmith instruction, all needed materials and tools in beautiful downtown Pagosa Springs, Colorado, on the San Juan River. A completed two-piece, one-tip bamboo fly rod of your choice of weight (3wt-6wt) and length, choice of agate stripping guide, reel seat spacer, and grip type and size. All participants will also receive an organic hemp rod sock, premium rod tube, and shop apron to take home with you upon completion of the class. PJ’s Fine Bamboo Rods provides all participants with all needed tools and equipment needed to complete the rod. A $500 deposit is due at the time of registration, the remaining balance of $2,095 is due two weeks before the start of the class. Both the deposit and remaining balance can be paid on the website or a recurring invoice can be arranged for payments. Students should be prepared for six full days of class in order to complete their rods in the allotted time. There will be a break for lunch each day and an estimated end time to the day. However, both the lunch hour and after the end of class time can be used for participants to catch up if not completed with the steps for the day. Please do not make alternative plans for any portion of the classroom time to allow enough time to finish the rod in six days.

The class will be hosted in downtown Pagosa Springs, Colorado, a workshop located at 262 Pagosa Street. There are numerous nearby restaurants for lunch and dinner options.

Black Canyon Quilt Show

The 27th annual Black Canyon Quilt Show, on July 12—14, will feature 150 + quilts, vendors, scissor sharpening, classes and lecture by quilt artist Laura Loewen, boutique with handmade quilt related items, and a raffle quilt. Show hours are 9—5 on Friday and Saturday; 10-3:30 on Sunday. Adult admission is $5.00. Garden of the Gods Art Festival

The inaugural Garden of the Gods Art Festival will take place at one of the most picturesque properties of Colorado Springs – Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site. This living history ranch shares the entrance road to Garden of the Gods park, a 1300 acre National Natural Landmark known for its sandstone rock formations. This new fine art and craft festival, hosted by Dash Events, will take place outdoors the 3rd weekend in May – May 18 & 19. 150 artists will be juried to show and sell their work. Admission proceeds will benefit Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site. Parking for vendors and attendees is free & plentiful.

Collecting and Collections by Renowned University Expert

Russell Belk, Distinguished Research Professor and Marketing Chair at York University in Toronto, Canada, will present Collecting and Collections by Zoom from 10:30 am to noon on Saturday, April 27. The presentation is being hosted by the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures. Dr. Belk will address the role that collections play in our lives, families, and communities as well as how collecting impacts the person who accumulates the objects. Digital collections and online access to museum collections will also be explored. Dr. Belk is the author of more than 800 journal articles and books as well as the recipient of numerous awards. In the announcement of his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Dr. Belk was described as a world leader in his field as well as one of the founders of Consumer Culture Theory. Tickets to the presentation are $5 per Zoom registration, and reservations are required at globalvillagemuseum.org. Registrants will receive the Zoom link the day before the program. Pack Rats at Heart: The Joys of Collecting

With over 60 years of adventures collecting artifacts, Gary and Carol Ann Hixon will present Pack Rats at Heart: The Joys of Collecting from 1-2:30 pm Saturday, May 4, at the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures. The Hixons’ collections include Chinese mud men, nativity scenes, angels, purses, dolls, kimonos, chairs, decorative boxes, roosters, shoes, and trinkets from gumball machines. Additions to their collections have come from the many countries they have visited, including England, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Denmark, Austria, France, Italy, Turkey, India, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Admission to the presentation is $5 per person, and reservations are requested at globalvillagemuseum.org. Refreshments will be served, and registrants will enjoy free admission to the Museum’s four galleries. In the Museum’s Main Gallery, Collections: Unexpected Treasures showcases a variety of unusual collections, including fossils, combs, rocks, thimbles, Cooper’s tools, scrap metal transformed into artwork, stone axes, masks, barbed wire, music boxes, and African baskets. Brushes & Brews
